Established in 1978, North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services is a nonprofit, public service organization. It provides civil and post-conviction services to the state's incarcerated population. The organization delivers a range of legal services to a population of more than 35,000 Department of Crime prisoners and over 12,000 pretrial detainees. North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services offers services to nearly 13,000 cases annually. It provides information and advice concerning legal rights and responsibilities and representation in court to ensure humane conditions of confinement and to challenge illegal convictions and sentences. The organization also discourages frivolous litigation and works toward administrative resolutions of legitimate problems. Its advocates are involved in various activities to improve the criminal justice system. North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services has a staff of approximately 35 personnel, including more than 15 lawyers and over 10 paralegal employees. It is located in Raleigh, N.C.
