I’ve never been one to write reviews, but due to how horribly Barks and Bones, more specifically Lorena, handled an important situation I think it’s important others looking into this care center are fully informed.

After the unfortunate closing of our previously used local care facility I was intent on finding an equally great place for Jasper, my dog, to spend some of his days and nights. I knew that many of the other dogs that attended the same facility as my dog moved to Barks and Bones, so I contacted Lorena. When we finished speaking I felt assured by her answers so we moved on to the next stage in which Jasper was “interviewed” and accepted by Lorena and her staff. Starting in February of this year Jasper started attending Barks and Bones, and everything went smoothly until he was seriously injured after being attacked at Lorena’s facility. When sending your dog to a care facility there is always a risk that something like this might happen (per the waivers that are signed before your dog attends any facility like this); what encouraged me to write this review isn’t that Jasper was attacked, it’s how terribly the situation was handled after the attack.

Lorena and her staff did not take Jasper initially to the hospital and then failed to check in on him after he was in the hospital, after his surgery, or during any of his time in recovery. I think that as an owner of a facility, and more importantly as a caring human being, there would be a desire to know how the injured animal was doing. If I were in their place, without a doubt in my mind, I would check to see how the animal was recovering. Jasper left their care with 5 serious puncture wounds. His chest wounds were severe enough that he had to have a tube inserted to drain the fluid filling his upper body. The bite he took to one of his legs hit his joint and left him with leaking joint fluid. Lorena called once during this entire situation but not to check on Jasper but to tell not to inform other owners of which dog attacked Jasper because she didn’t want other customers to be afraid of putting dogs in her care.

I still do not know the full story of what happened that day. The staff member who was watching the dogs at the time of the incident quit soon after everything unfolded.

All of Lorena’s current and future customers should be made aware of how she may handle any stressful situation. The day of the attack I called to inform Lorena on how Jasper was doing; instead of showing genuine concern for Jasper she told me about how stressful it was for her that day; how the dogs and all of her staff were upset and that she needed to help them get over it. Based on all of the above I didn’t bring Jasper back and only asked that the unused portion of my 10-day package be refunded, despite Jasper’s medical expenses coming out to over $1000! In the end what’s most important is that our dogs are cared for, which Lorena hasn’t shown at any point since the attack occurred.
